While the streets of Outposts are just as dangerous as a regular town of the same level, they do offer a permanent dedicated Outpost, which serves as a safe haven for you to store your items, pick up quests or to buy and sell items on the market.Įvery day these outposts will come under attack by hoards of infected, with each outpost being attacked once a day. Three of the towns, Dallbow, Haverbrook and Greywood, are Outposts, as highlighted by their town name being written in yellow on the world map. The difficulty of all towns changed every day with the exception of Outpost zones, and the standard towns of Archbrook and Coopertown. The various towns had varying levels, representing the difficulty of the town, with higher difficulty towns presenting more numerous and more powerful infected. The various different locations were each defined by their own unique layout, with higher level areas introducing new infected and mutated bosses. The world map was divided into a series of 15 towns or cities, each of these locations could be travelled too via a car or on foot if you lacked fuel to reach the destination. This map represented the former world of Dead Frontier 2. Players may travel safely within PvP zones without the fear of being exposed to unwanted PvP activity by going into Lobby and choosing "Play Solo" option. There is currently no additional loot or EXP available within the PvP zones, so the main reasons of entering the zones are scoring points towards your personal PvP score, or for daily missions that happen to be within a zone. However, PvP will be disabled when players are inside the buildings. Players are immediately allowed to engage in a PvP open combat when entering either the zone in the city. One is located located in Dawnhill and the other one in Greywood. Two 2x2 size red colour PvP Combat zones exist. Failure to defend the outpost will result in it being 'abandoned' for one hour, with all NPCs except the Trader being unavailable, and all rooms other than the lobby being swarmed with infected. When an attack occurs, a large alarm siren blares and the adjacent cells to the outpost will change into an orange colour, with infected spawning in all adjacent zones and charging at the outpost. But maybe its critics have all been a little hasty to judge so hard. So, sure, the spotted lanternfly isn’t really a bug you’d want to cozy up to. Researchers still don’t have a grasp of key facts, such as exactly how far spotted lanternflies can travel in their life span, or key defenses, such as how best to trap them. And even then, they don’t thrive like they would in nature. Spotted lanternflies survive on potted trees-if they’re swapped out every few weeks. Scientists have been able to raise another invasive bug, the Asian long-horned beetle, on maple branches, logs, and even an “artificial diet,” Hoover told me. “It’s probably the hardest to do research on”-in part because of its voracious appetite. “It is the most unusual insect I’ve ever studied,” she said. Read: When conservationists kill lots (and lots) of animals Hoover has heard of entire vineyards succumbing to spotted-lanternfly-induced stress. So worries were, in part, justified: A 2020 study found that among a sampling of Pennsylvanian vineyards, higher densities of spotted lanternflies were linked with a decrease in fruit production and overall vine health. They can devastate grape crops by feeding on sap and excreting a substance called honeydew, which causes black-mold growth, Kelli Hoover, a Penn State entomologist who studies the insect, told me. Even after Korean vineyards were sprayed with pesticides, spotted lanternflies were reported to “ rapidly repopulate,” swarming in from adjacent wooded areas. When the lanternflies showed up here, the “really problematic” proclivity for grapes and stone-fruit crops they had already demonstrated in South Korea alarmed researchers, according to Emelie Swackhamer, who educates locals on the invasive bug for Penn State Extension. A single tree can host more than 12,000 of the grown sap-suckers across one week. Female spotted lanternflies can pop out 30 to 50 potential offspring packed tightly into an egg mass smaller than a human thumb. Spotted-lanternfly infestations have since been documented in 11 states, but are centralized in the stretch of Eastern Seaboard from Virginia to New York. The bugs were first found in the United States in Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 2014, after supposedly hitching a ride as a bundle of eggs from China via a shipment of stone. Yet in the eight years since the bugs first made American backyards their home, some of the most shocking damage has come not from spotted lanternflies themselves, but from overzealous (and very human) attempts to stop them. “If you see thousands of these very large insects feeding on your tree, then the first thought you’re going to have is That tree is not going to survive this,” Brian Walsh, a Penn State Extension educator, told me. ![]() The bug’s wide-ranging appetite for at least 103 different plants worldwide, according to the latest research, has perhaps contributed to its reputation as an indiscriminate life-drainer. The motive for attacks of such self-congratulatory glee-and such careful viciousness-is supposed to be a dire environmental prognosis, our belief that the spotted lanternfly is a threat to Mother Nature herself. He developed an app called Squishr, which ranks users’ spotted-lanternfly kills, complete with gory photos as evidence, on a national leaderboard. “It’s kind of a crusade,” according to Brad Line, who lives in Pennsylvania. Haters have organized “squishathons” and spotted-lanternfly-killing pub crawls. And another: “I can honestly say that’s the biggest adrenaline rush I’ve had all 2020.” “I KILLED A SPOTTED LANTERNFLY!!!” another exclaims. “See ’em? SQUISH ’EM!” reads one tweet, complete with a trophy photo of two bug carcasses stuffed inside tiny glass jars. ![]() The dotted, mothlike bugs tend to hop, after all, sometimes narrowly escaping the (almost) perfectly timed thud of a sneaker. In rheometry, the dynamic viscosity is obtained through the application of a shear flow in a thin film of the considered fluid. However, viscosity measurements based on glass capillary viscometry may have certain limitations specifically, these measurements can be carried out only at a predefined, constant shear rate, and the registration of the flow time is often performed manually, making the method work-intensive and time-consuming.Īlternatively, the intrinsic viscosity of cellulose solutions can be determined by measuring the dynamic viscosity via rotational rheometry. This method has been widely applied, due to its relatively straightforward measurement procedure. By using the Mark-Houwink-Sakurada equation, the viscosity-average degree of polymerisation (DP v) is finally obtained as a function of the intrinsic viscosity. From the kinematic viscosity, the intrinsic viscosity of the solution is determined next. The procedure is based on glass capillary viscometry, which enables to determine the kinematic viscosity of the dilute cellulose solution in terms of the flow time that is needed for the fluid to pass through a capillary tube. ![]() For this purpose, cadmium triethylene diamine dihydroxide, cuprammonium hydroxide or cupriethylenediamine can be used. More often, the DP is evaluated by means of viscosity measurements on a dilute cellulose solution that is prepared by dissolving cellulose samples in a solvent. Size exclusion chromatography provides the molar mass distribution of cellulose, and consequently, the distribution of the DP and the polydispersity index. In the literature, different methodologies have been proposed to assess ageing of paper samples. The extent of paper degradation is typically quantified in terms of the Degree of Polymerisation (DP), defined as the average number of monomeric units in the cellulose molecules, and its accurate determination plays an important role in paper ageing studies. This phenomenon has important consequences for the structural integrity of paper, as a decrease of the molecular weight is directly related to a reduction of the mechanical properties of cellulose, e.g., the tensile strength. Hydrolysis reactions cause cleavage of the cellulose molecular chains through breakage of the glycosidic linkages, thereby resulting in a reduction of the average length of the cellulose chains, and thus in a reduction of the molecular weight. The agreement in measurement results further demonstrates that rheometry is an easy-to-use, accurate and efficient alternative for DP v measurements by glass capillary viscometry.Īcid-catalysed hydrolysis is one of the main factors governing the degradation of paper. At a longer ageing time, both experimental methods reveal a non-linear decrease in time of DP v, and a non-linear increase in time of the number of cellulose chain scissions, which indicate that the cellulose ageing process is realistically captured. The measurement results regarding the age-dependency of DP v and the number of cellulose chain scissions are compared to those obtained by glass capillary viscometry, showing a very good agreement. ![]() The rheometry method has been applied to 4 hygrothermally aged cellulose paper samples and the unaged counterpart. Also, rheometry measurements are less work-intensive than glass capillary viscometry measurements. Further, rheometry typically requires considerably less paper mass per test than glass capillary viscometry, which makes the method attractive for paper degradation studies with limited sample availability. Rheometry allows to measure the viscosity for a range of shear rates, which results in multiple DP v evaluations per sample, and thus in statistically representative data from an individual test. The proposed methodology relies on the application of a shear flow in a thin film of cellulose solution to measure its dynamic viscosity, from which DP v can be subsequently derived in a straightforward fashion. The current study proposes an efficient, alternative method to evaluate DP v of cellulosic paper, which is based on rotational rheometry. DP v can be deduced from the viscosity of dilute paper solutions, as typically measured through glass capillary viscometry. In paper degradation studies, the viscosity-average degree of polymerisation (DP v) is often used as a key indicator of the extent of degradation of cellulosic paper. |
